Jesus this is dark.

”Sometime in the Spring of 2009 I tried to kill myself. Six months before that, I used a Voor’s Head Device for the first time.“  This line opens the 150-page book that accompanies Giles Corey, an intensely personal, intimate portrait of depression that took me almost 4 years to make.” – Dan Barrett (Giles Corey)

Here is more about the album, and what a “Voor’s Head Device” is.

A friend made a Facebook post about a doom band name generator. I gave it a try and I got “Void Architects,” which pretty good, but  I thought “Architects of the Void” sounded better. So good that there is no way that a band isn’t called that. So I did search on Bandcamp, and I ended up on  Behold! The Monolith’s page. Their latest album being called “Architects of the Void.”

I don’t dally go for the super growly vocals, but they work on this track. They are more or less texture, another level of sound.  Other tracks from the album don’t fair as well (more me) with the vocals basically becoming exactly what I don’t like about growling.

Umbral Vale probably isn’t the best representation of the album as a whole. Its shorter and sludgier than most of the album and lacks real vocals, which is probably why its my stand out track.

Its not all yelling and banging on stuff around here. Sometimes its sad, songs with a touch of the good Ryan Adams.

I slept hard on this band for a few reason: lots go guys in the band, all wearing suits (at least the few promo photos I had seen), a dude in an eye patch and Asian Man put out their albums. I just assumed they were a ska band and I didn’t need to bother.

I was so wrong. Thanks again Spotify Discover weekly playlist.
